AoT Leiden: How things move in space (Leiden, in English)
The next Astronomy on Tap Leiden will take place on Tuesday 24 September at the Galerie Café Leidse Lente (new venue!) at 20:00 CEST. Veronica Saz Ulibarrena and Caspar Bruenech will tell us about the dynamics of objects in space, which sometimes even collide! As always, there will be fun games where you could win cool science prizes!
Veronica Saz Ulibarrena: How do things move in space?
If we get on a car, we know that following the shortest distance means going on a straight line. However, things move a bit differently in space. In this talk, Veronica will explain the movement of celestial bodies in space and how we can simulate it using numerical integrators. Veronica is a PhD student in Astronomy at Leiden Observatory, working on the use of Artificial Intelligence for the simulation of the gravitational N-body problem, including planetary system evolution and star clusters.
Caspar Bruenech: Triples on the verge of a nervous breakdown: A chaotic look at unstable three-star systems
Caspar is a PhD candidate at the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy in Amsterdam. With an affinity for programming, Caspar works in the realm of computational astrophysics, with special emphasis on computer simulations of multiple stars and how they interact with each other. In this presentation, he will talk about triple star systems and how these can become unstable, resulting in either a collision between two stars or the ejection of one star from the system.
Logistical information
The AoT starts at 20:00 sharp, so please arrive earlier to enter the hotel, save a seat, and grab a drink at the bar. The organisation uploads a recording of the talks on our YouTube channel. Galerie Café Leidse Lente is located at Haagweg 4 in Leiden. Payed parking is located at Haagweg 8.
